Range Rover 2013

New Range Rover 2013

The 2013 Range Rover, aka The All-New Range Rover, aka Range Rover 4, aka Range Rover L405, is the 4th generation of what is now an iconic design. Demonstrator and showroom vehicles arrived at UK Land Rover dealerships in January 2013 just before the first deliveries to UK customers were made. The UK waiting list is 6-9 months.

Reviews from UK motoring journos emerged during the last three months of 2012. In the Sunday Times of 16 December TopGear presenter and Rangie fan Jeremy Clarkson concluded his review of the 2013 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 diesel V8 thus - "It is a fantastic car. Not just the best off-roader in the world but one of the best cars full stop." The TopGear website scores the new Range Rover 9/10 as "One of the best luxury cars money can buy: this really is a bit of an all-round superstar."

Test vehicles were made available to American and Canadian motoring journalists in January 2013, resulting in a flood of very favourable reviews from the USA and Canada in February. Hell For Leather magazine summed up the drive as "In a word, awesome." The North American waiting list is 6-12 months.

Test ride reviews

The first reviews of the new Range Rover 2013 were based on motoring journalists having test rides rather than test drives during September and October 2012. Despite this lack of drive time the verdicts were universally favourable and it looked like the latest Rangie was likely to set a new benchmark. Kicking Tires, the blog of US website Cars.com, concluded that "This thing can’t lose.”

On Sunday 7 October the Sunday Times published Part 1 of its listing of the ‘Top 100 Cars’. #1 in the ‘Top 4x4s’ section was the 2013 Range Rover - “…it is the all-new version of the car, which is due to go on sale next year, that we nominate as the best 4x4. No journalist has yet driven it but after having a ride we have no doubt it will continue as leader of its class.”

Cars UK was surprised at this premature accolade – “We have little doubt the new Range Rover is sensational, but judging it the best 4×4 on the planet on the basis of a passenger ride?” However Cars UK did concede that “…it’s no doubt the first of many gongs to come for Land Rover’s 2013 Range Rover.” Autocar was also impressed – “The all-new, 2013 Range Rover 4 marks a huge shift upmarket. It is lighter, more agile, more spacious and more comfortable than ever. In fact, it looks set to set new standards for the class.” Cars UK concluded that” it seems likely that Range Rover holds the aces in comparison to the Bentley SUV…”

Writing in The Independent, David Wilkins said of his test ride in the 4.4 turbo-charged diesel V8 - "I can hardly wait to get behind the wheel myself. Only that will give the full picture, but on the evidence we have so far, the new Range Rover could be very good indeed."

The new Range Rover made the cover of the September issue of CAR magazine.

Inside CAR were ten pages of photos and text which suggested “14 reasons why Britain’s 4x4 will rule the world” -

#01Because it has presence like no other
#02 Because it’s the biggest Range Rover yet
#03 Because it’s the original and best
#04 Because it’s finally fit to be chauffeured in
#05 Because the interior is exquisite
#06 Because it’s faster and more efficient than ever
#07 Because it’s built like no Range Rover before
#08 Because the plug-in hybrid is as clean as a Prius
#09 Because the world can’t get enough of them
#10 Because this is just the start…
#11 Because it’s still unbeatable off-road
#12 Because it’ll be great on-road too
#13 Because it’s 20% lighter
#14 Because it’s the one its rivals have to beat

A key concern for many prospective buyers was addressed by Cars UK - "Do we think the 2013 Range Rover is going to attract a premium? Oh, yes."

Test drive reviews

Initial press coverage of the new Range Rover was very positive, albeit based on ‘test rides’ rather than ‘test drives’. The first reviews based on test drives emerged in the last week of October 2013 after Land Rover had made the new Range Rover available in Morocco to the motoring journos. ‘Rave reviews’ is no exaggeration – check out the sample below.

Tom Ford of TopGear took the new Rangie to Iceland for a little test drive and concluded thus – “I can see people launching themselves out of BMW 7-Series and Mercedes S-Class as fast as their chubby little Captain of Industry legs can carry them. I can see Bentley owners looking at the 5.0 litre V8 and wondering whether they really need a Flying Spur. And best of all? The absolute evidence of new Range Rover achievement? I can see current Range Rover owners simply saying ‘Yes, please’ and ordering another.” Read the whole review in the December issue of TopGear magazine.

TopGear presenters Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond are both huge Rangie fans. To quote Clarkson on the outgoing Range Rover - "Both Hammond and I know that the only car you need is a Range Rover diesel..." (or something very much like that). Clarkson reviewed the new 4.4-litre V8 diesel Range Rover for The Sunday Times in December 2012 and concluded "That would be my choice. Will be my choice, in fact..."

CAR magazine February 2013 - "Range Rover in Morocco"

"On the streets of Chelsea, of Beijing, of Moscow, the new Range Rover is already crowned king in waiting. But it’s here on Africa’s mountains and deserts, that its true genius reveals itself"
"There aren’t many cars that ride like a Rolls when you’re on the road, but will keep going effortlessly if you suddenly veer off it. Scratch that - this is the only one..."
"Steering wheel leather is so gorgeous it’s like being in a Bentley."

Sunday Times, October 28 – rating 5/5

“It’s the first new Rangie for a decade – and the best ever.”
“….unrivalled off road, while providing Rolls-Royce levels of luxury.”
“….Range Rover knew it had to build the ultimate 4x4. And once again it has pulled it off.”

Daily Express, October 27 – rating 10/10

“Range Rover hits new high”
“More luxurious, better handling and more refined, Land Rover invented the luxury 4x4 more than 40 years ago and has just reinvented it with this new Range Rover.”
“A motoring icon reborn better than ever before.”

The Telegraph, October 27 – rating 4/5

“The new Range Rover is a burly brute, larger and more powerful, yet lighter than its predecessors. But its capabilities in the mud are what truly set it apart.”
“On the road, the revised air suspension is a huge improvement, especially in its low-speed ride quality.”
“This is a lovely machine, although with prices starting at £71,295 you would expect it to be.”

Cars UK, October 27

“Wrap that impressive performance and handling up with the imperiousness the Range Rover offers, the even more luxurious cabin, more room and (slightly) better economy, and you have to question why anyone would buy a luxury saloon.”
“….there seems little doubt the new Range Rover has taken all things RR to a completely new level.”

What Car?, October 26

“Perhaps the major advantage of the weight savings – whatever the engine – is how agile the Range Rover now feels.”
“The world’s best SUV? Easily. The world’s best luxury car? It’s arguable.”

AutoCar, October 26

“The new Range Rover is much like the old one. Just much better.”
“The TDV6 does almost everything you could ask of it, does it for longer, and does it for less.”

Automobile Magazine, November 2

"Land Rover's design team has managed to raise the bar again"
"The new vehicle is so quiet, so refined, so comfortable, and so luxurious...it could effectively take the place of both an SUV and a luxury sedan in one's garage."

CarBuzz, 1 November – rating 8.9/10

“The best 4x4 on sale....Bentley levels of luxury”
“Value? For the luxury, there’s nothing else quite like it. If you’re in the market, then no other car has the same mix of talents for less money.”

Edmunds, 31 October

"Like most of the Range Rovers before it, this one is as much about prestige as it is about capability and comfort. Land Rover was smart to keep the look, the luxury and even the big wheels and tires. The fact that it's more efficient, too, will most likely come as a nice surprise to owners who couldn't care less."

Honest John, 28 October

"The fourth generation Range Rover represents a real leap forward compared to the outgoing model, particularly in terms of comfort, refinement and handling."
"No other car, 4x4 or otherwise, can do what the new Range Rover can do."

Car and Driver, October

"And few demonstrate the myriad benefits of making a vehicle lighter and stiffer as dramatically as Land Rover has with this new Range Rover."
"...this new Range Rover contends for that endlessly debated “world’s best” title. It really is that good."

Road & Track, October 27

"The new Range Rover is an altogether better-looking machine, with a cleaner design and the sparkly bits like LED lamps tucked away under glass covers."
"Of course it’s the best Range Rover ever. That much is a given..."

National Post, November 5

"Indeed, while the Range Rover has lost none of its regal demeanour, but it now packs a Porsche Cayenne-like punch."
"Combined with newly firmed up air springs, an improved Dynamic Control anti-roll system and a new multilink rear suspension, the 2013 Range Rover is both comfortable and sporty where the previous version was just compliant."

Motor Trend, November 5

"Serene Survivalist: Sampling the latest in leather-lined, all-wheel-drive emergency preparedness"
“....but if Mother Nature is increasingly likely to make our roads into off-road adventures, then maybe the go-everywhere Range Rover makes more sense than it used to."

AutoBlog, Nov 7

"2013 Range Rover in Morocco (with 1971 Range Rover)... check out the photos Land Rover has released showing both the new and old Range Rovers."

Wall Street Journal, November 9

"Range Rover: If You Must Buy a Luxury SUV..."
"Hulking deluxe sport-utilities have too much off-road capability for almost all drivers, and the new Range Rover is no exception. But, oh, is it a wonderful machine.”

Wheels.ca, November 5

"At first glance, the casual onlooker could be excused for thinking the differences between the 2012 and 2013 models were superficial, thanks to some subtle visual trickery."
"The 2013 Range Rover is equipped with the fifth generation of Land Rover’s incredible four wheel independent air suspension. This system, coupled with the spectacular Terrain Response 2 setup is the most advanced drive combination on the market."

Car Advice, November 12 - rating 4.5/5

"The Range Rover hasn’t changed, yet it absolutely has."
"The Range Rover is mausoleum-silent on smooth surfaces...."
"...the new Range Rover feels decidedly car-like..."

TopGear, 26 October

"Lighter, less thirsty, more luxurious..."
"On the road, Land Rover sees its main rivals in terms of refinement as the likes of the Bentley Flying Spur, with wind and road noise best in class thanks to new suspension and sound-deadening, but this is still a proper off-roader."

Motor Authority, November 14

"On the road, the new Range Rover feels more like a sedan (albeit a big, tall sedan) than ever before."
"If you think the Range Rover has sacrificed off-road prowess for on-road comfort, think again."

The Car Connection, rating 9.2/10

"Reassuringly familiar shape." "The 2013 Land Rover Range Rover swaps steel for aluminum, and delivers better performance and luxury in every dimension."

Sympatico.ca, November 13 - rating 4.5/5

"It’s clear Range Rover is now targeting top-end luxury vehicles like the BMW 7-Series et al, and the upcoming Bentley SUV."
"With its improved handling, lighter weight and beautiful interior, the 2013 Range Rover is also one of the best luxury cars currently available."

Recombu, 31 October

"It's awesome." "The Range Rover has always been one of the most well rounded automotive propositions ever conceived, and it just got better."

MSN Cars, 26 October - rating 5/5

"The new Range Rover is simply brilliant. The showroom appeal of the interior has moved further up the scale, matching the large luxury saloons even if the luggage space may not."
"On the road the essential Range Rover DNA is all there, with peerless off-road ability and great on-road performance. It’s a car that's hard to dislike."

Autonet.ca, 16 November

"Though it has been completely reworked, its silhouette remains almost identical to the previous generation’s."
"But I must admit that this new generation is impressive; where the previous generation could climb mountains, we could believe this one will take us on Mars."

ZerCustoms, 16 November

"Lumma Design is one of the first tuners to offer an aftermarket program for the new generation 2013 Range Rover."
"Lumma's new Range Rover (2013) sits on huge 22-inch alloys and a 40-mm lowered suspension system."

TopGear Magazine, December issue

“The new Range Rover is here. And it’s everything you expect. But better.”
“The RR is a very quiet car – even on bad roads.”
“What it is, is a Range Rover at the very top of its game. Then again, the Range Rover isn’t really a SUV any more. It’s become something else.”

Yahoo! Autos, November 8

"The new SUV looks much like the old one, embracing the Porsche 911 strategy of not messing with a good thing..."
"This is still most certainly an SUV. I'd say, the best."

Parkers, 26 October - rating 4.5/5

"New 3.0-litre diesel impressive, luxury travel, state-of-the-art technology, sheer capability"
"The all-new 2013 Land Rover Range Rover is the fourth-generation of the iconic off-roader. While the looks may be similar (the British company claims this is an evolution of the car) there are many very significant changes."

IndianAutosBlog, October

"Land Rover arduously tested the new Range Rover for 18 months and in 20 countries to make sure that the final product is as technically advanced and uber luxurious a car in the company’s history."

Left Lane, October

"...the new Range Rover's lights sweep back into the fenders, further accentuating the rounded appearance."
"Full-size luxury SUV rivals to the Range Rover include the Lexus LX 570, the Cadillac Escalade and the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class."

Jalopnik, September

"When we first saw the new Range Rover, we weren't all that excited. 'It looks like a Ford Explorer' was a frequent refrain. Seeing it in person is a totally different experience. It works, and it works well."
"All the elements come together to make an SUV that is actually rather attractive."

Daily Nation, 27 November

"2013 Range Rover: The bar has been raised… yet again"
"I don’t need to stress the fact that the car handles well: really well."

Cool Hunting, 24 January

"2013 Range Rover - The fourth generation of Land Rover’s flagship SUV is a relentless blend of luxury and performance"

AutoGuide.com, February 1

"Range Rover, a vehicle that perhaps more than any other, has adapted to changing times while staying true to its rugged roots."
"Notably restyled for 2013, the Range Rover has softer edges with a more swept back design....It doesn’t take long before the new look is as familiar as the old."

Farmers Weekly, 5 February

"The Range Rover remains the undefeated champion of 4x4 luxury."
"The base price is now a tad over £70,000 and it has its sights on Bentley and Rolls Royce, so you know that the new Range Rover is a serious lump of metal."
"That price probably means its target audience has slimmed again."

Dearborn Press & Guide, February 25

"Range Rover ups the ante for luxury off-roaders"
"Range Rover has created a luxury vehicle that’s ultimately capable off-road and has as much luxury as any other vehicle, whether a sport utility vehicle or sedan. They must, because the people attracted to this car expect perfection."

Daily Express, 2 March

"Range Rover’s fine first impressions built to last"
"We have driven it on different continents and in different conditions yet we remain mightily impressed by the new Range Rover....will there be a better all-round car launched this year? We doubt it."

The Reporter, 2 March

"The 2013 Range Rover is elegant, exquisite and extremely comfortable while managing to maintain its legendary and rugged aplomb for conquering even the most challenging off-road (or non-road) obstacles."
"It is truly the best Range Rover, and that’s saying a lot."

Car Advice, 25 February, rating 4.5/5

2013 Range Rover SDV8 Review - "Luxurious interior; high levels of refinement, exceptional comfort, superb V8 diesel with huge torque; seamless eight-speed auto, much improved handling, quick enough, unrivaled breadth of ability"
"What we have now is something quite astounding – an SUV that sets the bar so high that absolutely nothing in the same segment can match it for quality and breadth of ability."
